1. A device that responds to physical stimuli, such as light, heat, sound, motion, magnetism or pressure, and transmits the resulting data or signal for operating a control, providing a measurement, or both.

2. A device that is used to measure or adjust differences in voltage in order to control sophisticated machinery dynamically.
