Cybernetics

The comparative study of automatic control and communication in functions of living bodies. The term from the Greek kybernetes, meaning steersman, governor, pilot, or rudder.

The essential goal of cybernetics is to understand and define the processes and functions of systems that have goals, and that participate in circular, causal chains that move from action to sensing to comparison with desired goal to action. Studies examine different forms of systems and apply what is known to make the design and function of any system, including artificial systems, more effective and efficient.
